The Regional Association I – Africa of WMO have established a working group on hydrology (WGH) with terms of reference encompassing the range of topics covered by the Hydrology and Water Resources Programme (HWRP). The association takes decision concerning the implementation of this regional activity. This working group considers hydrological problems of interest in Africa including, for example:

  • Insure the existence of the adequacy of networks of hydrological stations in African sub-regions;
  • The hydrological data transmission and processing facilities, data banks and requirements of Members for hydrological forecasting;
  • Improving the system for monitoring, collection, development and modernization of the measurement networks;
  • Improving knowledge of water resource assessment and monitoring;
  • Developing and strengthening capacity for adaptation in order to manage floods, droughts, pollution, desertification and climate change;
  • Raising financial resources, strong political commitment and awareness among states and financing bodies for the long-term planning, sustainability and continuity of hydrological monitoring activities;
  • Strengthening the framework for cooperation at local, national, regional and international level on the exchange of data and experiences – key elements of the WMO vision; and
  • Strengthening and developing regional components of the WHYCOS program.
  • Appling the application of WMO standards and recommended practices in hydrology;
  • Promotion and development of regional aspects of the hydrology in NMHs in Africa with respect to its application to the particular needs;
  • Studies of the special problems faced and the resulting needs of Hydrological Services in specific climatic zones.

Re-establish the Working Group on Hydrology

With following terms of reference:

  • Cooperate with the Commission for Hydrology (CHy), other WMO bodies and international organizations on projects related to hydrology and water resources;
  • Collaborate with various regional partnerships and River Basin Organisations;
  • Propose a mechanism to collaborate with other regional working groups such as on climate and disaster and collaborate with them;
  • Collaborate with the WMO Secretariat, as required, in implementing Hydrological Cycle Observing System (HYCOS) projects in the Region;
  • Continue to provide liaison with the Tropical Cyclone Committee (TCC) on the hydrological component of its technical plan;
