What is the Forum

The RA-I Working Group on Hydrology Forum is a platform where issues and challenges related to the operation of hydrological networks and services can be discussed among members of the Region’s National Hydrological Services (NHSs). It is designed to improve communication within the water and related sectors at national and regional scales. It is organized under the auspices of the RA-I Working Group on Hydrology (WGH), and operates through consultation among the WMO Secretariat, CHy, RA I WGH and NHSs.

Issues to be discussed

  • Encouraging the RAI members to register and participate actively in CHy OPACHE activities.
  • Suggested using the opportunity of the regional and international meetings (World Water Forum, African Water Week, HYCOS Steering Committee meetings, SADC meetings, and IGAD meetings) and devote one day for extraordinary meeting for RAI WGH. They requested WMO to consider providing financial support for one day for such meetings.
  • To assist the countries to prepare project proposals to strengthen the capacity of the NHSs and to assist in securing fund for these projects as much as possible given the limited financial resources.
  • Requested WMO to support the hydrological activities in the country through the rehabilitation or the installation of the available equipments.
  • Countries are invited to prepare country reports that would be used to consolidate the sub-regional report on a yearly basis.
  • Under the ordinary session every four years it is suggested to include a technical/training session for one extra day to address a specific theme.
  • Utilizing bilateral and multilateral organizations networks.
  • Invite the representatives of regional institutions, UN agencies, NGOs, IGOs, RBOs and private sector.
  • Countries are encouraged to exchange the result of their cooperation and extend their experience to other regions.
  • Encouraging and support cooperation between NMS and NHS as well as between developed and developing countries for exchange of experience and technology transfer.
  • Strengthening the countries capacity especially on the network establishment
  • The Active participation on updating WMO INFOHYDRO database and reply to any request from WMO secretariat to fill the missing information from Africa.
  • The participants recognized the vital and important role of the river/lake basin institutions in supporting their activities and the implementation of their workplan and recommended
  • Requested WMO to assist them in developing a webpage for RA I WGH to be used as a discussion forum and to facilitate their communications.
  • Appropriate linkages should be established with African Network of River Basin Organizations.
